| By Melissa Walker, author of the Violet on the Runway series If there's ever a time to shine, it's prom. You're all dressed up, you've worked hard on your hair and makeup, and there's just one more thing you need -- confidence. The "c" word is the biggest factor in enjoying your evening, because if you project confidence, your whole spirit will shine. Here's how to get the glow: Forget trends -- be you. ![]() Bright colors. Body-hugging bodices. Full skirts. Sexy halters. Choosing a dress for prom can be completely overwhelming. That's why it's important to remember who you are when making fashion decisions. Write down words that describe your taste. Are you into Old Hollywood? Retro skirts? Rock star fishnets? Romantic, floaty shapes? Know your style and find a dress that fits you in every way. Give yourself a pep talk. Noticing and appreciating the things you love about yourself will help others see those parts of you too. When you're getting ready for prom, take a minute to look in the mirror and say, "I look so pretty!" Repeat that compliment when you step into the bathroom to refresh your lip gloss at prom too. It may sound silly, but your subconscious mind will get the message and you'll project an air of confidence all night. Smile, smile, smile -- and stand up straight! Your physical presence says a lot about how you feel, so imagine that you're a queen for the night, and project that regal presence. Look people in the eye and smile, keep your back straight and your head up -- doing these physical moves has been shown to actually affect your mental state and make you feel more confident! An extra personal touch is using people's names when you're talking to them -- it puts them at ease and you come off like a sincere, smooth-talking socialite. Think of colorful stories to share. It's always helpful to have a few anecdotes up your sleeve when you're in a social setting like prom -- especially if you're with a date you don’t know very well. Think of something you're proud of, like your swim team victory or the way you tutor your little sister, and also remember any interesting trips you’ve taken or funny situations you've been in recently. When you share your stories, others will chime in with their own, so remember to be a good listener too! Relax. This night is pure fun, so don't stress or put too much pressure on yourself. If you feel nervous, just remember to take a deep breath and smile. Have fun! Other Articles You'll Love How To Pick a Boutonniere How To Stop Pre-Prom Stress 5 Ways to Cut Prom Costs | |
